The Road to Top Gun Leads to Excitement!

Today the 31st Annual Top Gun Scale Invitational kicked off the action with great weather and some amazing airplanes! Here are some of Bret Becker’s amazing XB-70 Valkyrie Supersonic Bomber. Road to Top Gun: F-104 Starfighter

Brian O’meara is returing to Top Gun this year and will be competing in the Unlimited class with his impressive 1/4-scale F-104 Starfighter. Brian debuted the Starfighter at Top Gun two years ago and has put on a lot of time in its log book since then. Road to Top Gun: Cessna L-19 Bird Dog

Our good buddy and Team Hitec pilot, Roger Niolet, of Sarasota, FL. will be competing in the Pro-Am Sport with his 1/4-Scale Cessna L-19 Bird Dog. Built from Vailly Aviation plans Roger will be flying it with a Hitec Aurora 9X Transmitter and a Hitec Optima 9 receiver. Road to Top Gun: Pietenpol Aircamper

From Sylvania, OH., John Borton is making his first trip to Top Gun this year and will be flying his 1/4-scale 1929 Pietenpol Aircamper in the Masters class. John drew up the plans from the original Pietenpol plans that he downloaded from the web. Road to Top Gun: Fokker D.VII

Bill Toppa of Lake City, FL is again competing at the Top Gun Scale Invitational this year, and is going to fly a Balsa USA 1/4 SPAD XIII the first time in Pro AM Prop class. His 1/3-scale Fokker D.VII weighs 46 pounds and has a 108-inch  wingspan. Bill’s Balsa USA WW I biplane uses a Futaba 14MZ radio system and is powered with a  ZDZ 80cc RV gas engine turning a Falcon 28-inch propeller. Mike Hague, (father of Cody Hague also competing), will be competing at his 5th Top Gun this year, in the Pro/Am Pro Prop category with his P-47 Thunderbolt. Starting out as a Top Flite ARF, I have str*pped all the covering off and fiberglassed and painted with latex paint. 10 years old Cody Hague, (son of Mike Hague, also competing), is competing at his 2nd Top Gun this year, and will be flying a Ziroli Stuka dive-bomber built by his grandfather Brian Hague in the Pro/Am Sport Prop category. Recently married couple Jordan (builder) and Larry Peterson (pilot) from Westland, MI are competing for the first time at Top Gun in 2019. Jamie Fiffles of Glendale California will be heading to Top Gun to compete in the Expert Class with his amazing, scratch built, all-wood, 1/4-scale F4U Corsair from Don Smith Plans. Road to Top Gun: F-18A Hornet

This year, Boli Muentes will be flying his new 1/5-scale F-18A in the X-Class.The BVM PNP jet is painted in the Royal Australian Air Force airshow demo scheme that celebrated the 20th anniversary of Australia receiving it’s first F-18 Hornet in 1983 so the “one off” scheme was displayed in 2003.
