For many of today’s experienced modelers, their early years of aeromodeling included building. Aircraft did not come out of the box ready to fly, and there was no such thing as a foamie.
Building aircraft taught them how to use tools, which glues worked best, and how to cover their models. Now a new generation will be introduced to the world of building, thanks to a partnership between AMA and the EAA.
The new Young Eagles Build and Fly program will introduce youth to aircraft construction and

I recently attended a new event in Ohio called RCS Fest 2018. I first met event Contest Director Nathan Saylor and his wife, Abby, at the annual full-scale Vinton County Air Show in McArthur, Ohio. At the time, Nate inquired about the possibility of hosting a model aviation event at the airport with the blessings of airport manager Nick Rupert.
Nate and I had several calls and emails during the winter to discuss the requirements nee

On Friday, May 4, 2018, I met with AOPA’s Tom Haines, senior vice president, Media and Outreach. We had a productive discussion about our common goals and inter

The 64th annual Toledo Expo held April 7-8-9, 2018 is history and from all indications was a success. I talked to several seasoned vendors and all were pleased with some having record sales or at the least exceeded last year’s sales. I can tell you the AMA booth was very busy with renewals and members stopping by to discuss our hobby. Is the Toledo show as big as it used to be? No. Is the hobby the same as it was 5, 10, 15, years ago? Heck no! Are clubs doing things to attract new members? Yes!
As your AMA District III Vice President I would personally like to invite you to a special AMA membership meeting at the Toledo RC Expo. Join me, Mark Radcliff, District III Vice President (OH, PA, WV), Gary Himes, District VI VP (KY, IL, IN, MO) and Tim Jesky, District VII VP (IA, MI, MN, WI), for an informal meeting to learn about the latest AMA news and events. Meet your district Associate Vice Presidents along with key personnel from AMA headquarters. Get answers to questions you have. Pleas
Rarely does a month go by that I don’t receive calls and emails from members in District III inquiring about the future of our hobby. The main concern is how do we get young folks interested in flying models?
Today’s generation has a thousand more choices for how to use its time than my generation did growing up. The fact is, there are many young folks who are excited about aviation today, however, the days of them showing up at our flying fields are gone.
