When it comes to building scale model airplanes, one task often stops new projects from even getting started: making a scale engine cowl from scratch. To produce a fiberglass unit, you have to build a master plug, lay up a female mold on top of it, and then use the mold to lay up the final cowl with fiberglass cloth and resin. Here’s how I made a “one-off” cowl, and the technique and materials needed can be used for any scale model you want to build.
